The IMAGINARIUM: rethinking the arts space in Leeds Central Library

Imaginarium Final for webAt the heart of Leeds Central Library is a little-known space visited by artists and audiences, communities and commuters. Located on the first floor, between the art and music libraries, it has been a venue for art works of all kinds – music, theatre, visual arts, dance and exhibitions. It’s a place of creative thinking and creative doing and is a less well-known part of the cultural fabric of the city.

Now Leeds Library and Information Service wants to develop this space into a dynamic environment that reflects the richness of its collections and its engagement with the localities and people of Leeds.  We’re at the early stages of thinking about the space, and your ideas can make a difference.

How could we bring a new kind of creative energy to this special place in the Central Library? Have you been there?

For one day only on 1st May 2013, from 2pm-7pm we’re hosting The Leeds IMAGINARIUM with artist Shanaz Gulzar and architectural designer Robert Sharples, a creative drop-in consultation event, open to all.

So if you are an artist, member of the public, arts company or community group we’d love you to imagine what this space could be.  We want to find out whether, and how, you’d be interested in using it in the future.   So come and tell us what you think –

–      What do you feel is missing from Leeds city centre in terms of arts spaces?

–      How can we complement what is already there?

–      What are the potential links between the arts and libraries?

–      How can we open up creative processes and experiences?

–      How can we make it a more valued addition to the creative spaces and places in Leeds?

Date:                   1st May 2013

Time:                  2pm – 7pm

Location:          1st Floor Leeds Central Library: Follow the signs for the IMAGINARIUM

Drop in for 10 minutes or 2 hours and add your voice, sketches and thoughts to the process. Lets reimagine the space, dream up creative possibilities and capture what we would all like to see in it.

If you are unable to make the date but would like to contribute your thoughts please contact us on leedsimaginarium@gmail.com or tell us here!

  1. I dream of this type of aspirational approach in Bradford, to have creativity as a key element of the new Bradford Central Library.
