Nope, didn't make it as I have a day job.

I think it's good to reflect on both views. It is true piracy is huring music and musicians but it is also a fact of life so the quesion is who do we deal with that reality.

I thought maybe a small hat.

Were you at the Unconference to hear the speech? I may be guilty of paraphrasing slightly, that's all. Tom's speech was a bit more nuanced overall, but admittedly that was the message I took away. Personally I thought it was nice that somebody was actually being positive instead moaning about piracy killing music.

Condolences on the purchase of said CD. Maybe you could make it into a stylish earring? I hear it's what all the kids are wearing these days.

Good points.

I think I was reflecting on this daft idea from men in flat caps and beards that somehow the Internet represents a golden age with no pitfalls.

You are right to suggest it is part of an process that seems unstoppable but old farts like Tom suggesting it has shifted the power base seems simplitic to me.

As I indicated I listen to Spotify a lot which is perfect for listening to new music risk free, but I find so much of it tired and lifeless.

The reason I was listening to Laura on the car on a long journey was to try and finally work out what her apppeal is. But after 40 minutes of non tunes and crap lyrics I was still none the wiser.

On a more positive note I really like the new Ellen and Escapades album.

BTW...I thought this was a thought provoking review that certainly made me think about some of the issues facing the industry.

I wasn't presenting my personal views necessarily, merely representing those expressed by speakers on the day. It's true the music industry is evolving (isn't it always?) and I guess it's up to artists whether they wish to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the digital revolution, or suffer from the numerous disadvantages you mention. Do or die, hasn't this always been the way?

It's a real shame you feel there is so little originality in contemporary music. Maybe if you stopped listening to Laura Marling in your car it would help?

What is Tom Robinson on?

The Internet putting power back in the hands of artists?

How does depriving artists of a regular income stream through people ripping their music off online, and then not paying for it represent progress? Sure big record labels are scumbags but in the old model you at least got some cash for your work.

Ask artists who are constantly on the road to make ends meet if they think power is back in their hands.

And I have to cough to adding to this problem by being a Spotify addict.

I also disagree with Penny Re: this is the first time talent counts for something as I find the present music scene almost completely devoid of genuine talent or original ideas.

I was listening to Laura Marling in the car last night and you would have go some distance to find a more tedious and false 'artist'. Yet, she is one of the leading lights of the so called 'new folk' movement along with the equally bogus Mumford and Bores.

Graphic Design cannot be considered Art (and vice versa) if it has first been labelled Graphic Design, as definitions exist to separate. However if you remove prior classifications it becomes obvious that they are completely merged. People often argue that G.D needs a client, purpose or must problem-solve or be mass produced but when you look into these criteria they unravel easily:

British artists were commissioned to create the London 2012 posters while many graphic designers create work (clearly design) pro bono for themselves and exhibit it in galleries. Francesco del Giocondo was Da Vinci's client for the Mona Lisa.

Designers like Metahaven use Graphic Design as a tool for research and to ask questions, (in the vein of speculative designers/architects Dunne & Raby, Superstudio etc.) not solve problems.

Materials: Mass Art as posters, books, billboards and on their covers.
3D graphic design, limited editions, installations, use of traditional art materials. Warhol's mass screenprints printed by others (Initially a commercial artist and designed record sleeves.)

Donald Judd who worked in both fields said 'Design has to work, Art does not' which is probably the closest definition, however if successful graphic design is that which communicates, then its completely subjective and context dependent.
Besides, artists like Lawrence Weiner and Barbara Kruger and designers like M/M Paris, Sagmeister have blurred this line for several decades, creating art that looks like GD/Advertising, typography or making GD that is arty, subjective or vague.

Most Graphic Design is created to make money (er... Art?)

The fact that noone can agree on a definition and most people who create the work that causes debate don't care.

Much better to enjoy it regardless of what other people think it is. I call myself a graphic designer/artist depending on what commission I want.

I sat through one of Hugo's briefing for the Content Fund and it struck me how antiquated a method this was. Lots of talk about returning value to the region, but none about sharing the risks… and it seemed to largely be propping up old models of production.

From what I understand - I'd need to have Sean Connery contractually locked in and half my funding, plus a path to revenue secured to unlock this funding. Well, if you can manage that, you most likely don't need an assist…

Fortunately, for digital tech, the UK's got a reasonably good venture capital scene and an emerging set of accessible and innovative crowdfunding options, though angel investment isn't as mature as the US.

For a city that's purportedly the country's secondary fiscal hub, its not really capitalising on new models of funding…

Totally agree with your review of the museum, it's great for young children (and parents). And my children weren't keen on the Egyptology exhibit either, as you say everything's too high up, also it was 'too smelly'. They much prefer playing on the fabulous map of Leeds hidden on the floor of that room!

Revolving loan finds are in theory better than grants. In practice however they rarely work out well as the lender is on a hiding to nothing. If they lend they are usually villainised for the interest rates that they charge. If they don't lend they are villainised too. If they make bad loans - guess what? They get villainised....

Commercial projects are probably best left to the markets to finance. because public sector bodies don't have a great track record in picking the success stories that private investment capital has overlooked....

Let's hope that Screen Yorkshire come up trumps...

Revolving loan finds are in theory better than grants. In practice however they rarely work out well as the lender is on a hiding to nothing. If they lend they are usually villainised for the interest rates that they charge. If they don’t lend they are villainised too. If they make bad loans – guess what? They get villainised….

Commercial projects are probably best left to the markets to finance. because public sector bodies don’t have a great track record in picking the success stories that private investment capital has overlooked….

Let’s hope that Screen Yorkshire come up trumps…

Without wishing to sound bitter or snarky, the barriers are probably there to stop it being ruined by drunkards and scags :( As much as I love Leeds, you can't deny it has its population of idiots who love to ruin the good stuff for the rest of us.

In terms of a story though, I kinda like the idea that the barriers make it look so 'normal.' As if trees and ships sprouting from the ground is a common occurence in Leeds, almost like roadworks and potholes.

Anyone know if the artists conceived this piece with the crowd barriers in place?
In some ways they speak volumes.....

ANGELS OF PORTBOU:
I saw the film in Vienna a few weeks back and I was very, very moved. This is just the kind of cinema we love and need. I couldn't agree more with your words. Thank you. The film was never shown in France, did you know? But it will have it's premiere here in Pantin, near Paris, on June 13. The team will attend. So will I.
Thanks again. E.M.
