Kirkstall Abbey Deli Market

079And so, Kirkstall Deli Market finally arrives after a lot of chatter and anticipation. The picturesque setting of the Abbey is the perfect place for a Farmer’s Market (with whatever connotations that may bring) and it’s strange it’s taken this long for one to arrive here; especially given the success of similar monthly events at nearby Headingley and Oakwood.

So, was it any good? Of course it was. Small, perhaps, but showing plenty of promise. The Abbey provids a great backdrop and there were plenty of people doing some al-fresco lunching. Perennial CV favourites Dough probably rocked the most inventive stall, with little dishes and tidbits flying out. The Blue Pig Company’s meat looked delicious; in fact, I can personally vouch for thier sumptuous Black Pudding, and I used the opportunity to stock up. Surprisingly Latitude Wines had a little stall, too; Sloe Gin proving popular and some bottled beer from the likes of The Nook, Ilkley and Ossett keeping the Yorkshire Beer flag flying.

Pudsey Pickles were a new one for me, which is upsetting given that I live in Bramley. Still, their Chilli Jam caight the eye and I will certainly be buying from them in the future. Kirkstall’s a surprinsgly vibrant, active and local-minded community, and this sort of event is perfect for the location. Kirkstall Deli Market could be a massive success; and it’s shown a promising beginning here. Suppliers/Producers; get set up here, and let us know what you have to offer. Let’s make it bigger – and better – next month, and give the people of Kirkstall something to be proud about.

Kirkstall Deli Market takes place on the last Saturday of every month at Kirkstall Abbey. If you want to get involved, take a look here. You can follow them on Twitter @kirkstalldeli .

  1. I was there too today and thoroughly enjoyed it. The afternoon timing was ideal for me, getting two little one’s out the door for a morning farmers Market is too much like hard work on a Saturday morning!

I thought the setting was brilliant, we went to the Market and then headed into the Abbey to play amongst the beautiful ruins. I’ve never seen the Abbey so full of families and children. It was lovely to see and I’m sure the Market helped get lots of people there. We’ll certainly be going back.

  2. Sounds great! Unfortunately didn’t make it but definitely will be going next time. PS Pudsey Pickles cider apple chutney is the bomb.

  3. As a stallholder I approached thr Kirkstall Deli market with some trepidation. Would anyone turn up,would it rain, what would the site be like?, and would I be taking 50 trays of sausages home for my tea!
Needn’t have worried, lots of people turned up the sun shone and the setting was superb. My only regret….I sold out, black pudding particularly early, so had to disappoint some later customers. But not to worry I will be back next month and I promise to bring more………especially the black pudding!
