Students in Leeds: A positive contribution or just a load of rubbish?

Rebecca Rayson is organising an event that asks what impact do students have on the city, and wants to know what you think …

Do you have an opinion about the impact of students on the city of Leeds? Or perhaps you’re interested to hear what other people have to say? If so, Student Impact, a team of history students from the University of Leeds, would like to invite you to a dynamic debate event at Woodhouse Community Centre on Wednesday 7th May.

There seems to be a negative stereotype attached to students in Leeds. They are often viewed as lazy and messy, living apart from the city within their own little bubble. Our team wants to dispel this preconceived idea. Instead we have been investigating both the diverse and fascinating ways that students have become involved in Leeds life, and the areas in which they remain separate.

Therefore, we wanted to discover how students have contributed to the city Leeds over the past fifty years. Our research has included the political and religious impact of students, the expansion of the university and student integration into the Headingley and Hyde Park areas. Our group have undertaken different case studies to present at our exhibition from the first ‘Reclaim the Night’ march in the 1970s to more current issues such as the battle over the closing of Royal Park School.

Through this, we have come to believe that greater communication between students and the local community should be encouraged. So why not come along, mingle with a variety of new and interesting people and help us to bridge the gap! Your feedback will also be very helpful to our research, as we are continually looking for different and insightful opinions.

5.30pm: Doors open and refreshments will be served while you’re given the opportunity to explore and discuss our research

6.00pm: Our debate will kick off! We have a panel of guest speakers from organisations such as Unity Day and Reclaim the night who will be answering some of our questions. The debate will then be opened up to the floor, giving you the chance to express your views!

We will also be holding a bake sale in order to raise money for Unity Day, a fantastic organisation that aims to bring the people of Leeds together.
