September banner designer: Phil Wall

culturevuturebanner-edit-4
September’s banner design comes from the artist Phil Wall of Project Photo Doodle using a photo of the Leeds skyline, taken by Rick Harrison. Phil loves doodling on your photos from all over the world. He will not rest until he’s covered the entire globe in strange creatures! (But we made him rest, just so he could answer these important questions…)

Thank you so much for this month’s awesome banner Phil! In your opinion, what makes a do-odle rather than a don’t-dle?
Nice pun. Not over-complicating it, keep it doodley. With Project Photo Doodle I want them to look like part of the world, but still be a doodle.

Who, what and where inspires you ‘round these parts’?
Everywhere I go I’m inspired for Project Photo Doodle; I see doodles laying over buildings, crossing the road, sitting on bus shelters…when the weathers nice, I like to walk down to Brewery Wharf in Leeds, I like to imagine monsters towering over the apartments. I like The Royal Armouries, especially the Oriental section.

What colour is Tuesday?
I don’t care if Monday’s blue, Tuesday’s grey and Wednesday too…

Would you rather be a wrestler or a boxer? What song would you have playing as you walked out to fight?
A wrestler, I’d wear a Luchador mask! The entrance music would need very, very careful consideration. ‘Cry Little Sister’ by L.A. Guns, from The Lost Boys soundtrack, mainly because it would be massively amusing. It’s got an epic build up too!

Name your favourite pencil (via @typograph)
Derwent Graphic, probably because I used them from a young age. 2B to be specific.

Oodles of noodles, or oodles of poodles?
Noodles please, I have a cat.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I’d love to get a photo from one of my movie idols, Bill Murray would probably top the endless list. I love Bill.

Do you have any background entertainment on while you work?
I usually have itunes open while I work in photoshop and browse the net all at the same time. I have a little girl, so Cbeebies is usually on tv, I’m not sure if this has influenced my work…

If you could have any monster / creature in miniature as a pet, what would you have?
Godzilla, no question! A pet Ewok would be pretty damn cool, not sure if it counts.

What happens next Phil?
A nice brew and a biscuit.

  1. Simply awesome, best banner yet. I loves drawings on photos, though must confess animations over films REALLY get me going…

  2. I simply couldn’t go away your web site before suggesting that I actually loved the usual information a person supply on your visitors?
