A little while ago I wrote a short piece about Halloween films taking place in the Leeds area. Well it turns out I missed one (which, given my current job in market research and analysis, bodes well for my future career) and a pretty special one to boot.
From Thursday 31 October to Sunday 3 November Kirkstall Abbey will be hosting a Gothic Film Festival celebrating some of the greatest horror/gothic films ever made. Classics like Night of the Demon, The Devil Rides Out and Bride of Frankenstein are always worth a re-watch and the crumbling ruins of Kirkstall Abbey as a venue provide the perfect excuse to do so again or, if you’ve not done so already, introduce yourself to some great cinema history in an incredible setting.
On top of this there will also be screenings Nosferatu and The Passion of Joan of Arc with live music accompaniments as well as junior showing of Nosferatu on the Saturday aimed at a family audience (because my experiences of kids has taught me that they love German expressionism. “You want to go see the Wreck-it Ralph?” “No way man there’s a retrospective of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on at the Picture House”). The Abbey’s Chapter House will also be taking part offering Halloween Surprises, film extracts, short films, storytellers and free screenings of HAXAN (love that film) on Friday night.
