Aladdin

WyP.Aladdin.06 (1)

Who could resist the magic of Aladdin? We’re really excited by this production at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, not least because we are fans of the set designer Barney George (who is a bit of a magician!) In this instance his beautifully inventive set invokes a busy market place, and has been created in collaboration with Yorkshire primary schools, Leeds West Indian Carnival centre and the Playhouse’s over 55’s group Heydays. Inspired by Leeds and Bradford markets collaborators have been asked to design a market stall sign which will be incorporated into the final set portraying the diversity of market life and providing the perfect setting for this contemporary retelling of ALADDIN.

So what’s the plot?

In a marketplace near here, where everything is for sale from Once-upon-a-times to new lamps for old, we meet Aladdin. He’s not handsome, not brave, not strong, not clever but he’s our hero, and it is amongst the stalls of pots and pans and bric-a-brac that his story is told. He meets his long lost Uncle, the baddie of our tale, and falls for a beautiful Princess who might be just a little spoiled, and in a cave of untold riches Aladdin finds a lamp and gives it a rub… which is when our adventure really begins. From countless wishes, to flying carpets, from mystery Princes to Royal weddings, from Kings with everything and Mothers with washing, and a Genie with a lorry load of lamps. And so unfolds the tale of Aladdin and his magic lamp.
