Gifts for geeks

Guest gift guide by Ally Manock

I’m a typical woman who likes fashion (buying too many clothes), doing my hair (rarely getting it right) and baking cakes (then eating them all)….but I also embrace my inner geek. I absolutely love gadgets and someday I dream of being a cross between cat woman and inspector gadget. But better.

If you’ve got a geek in your life and you’re running out of ideas (and time!) for what to buy him or her for Christmas, take a look at some of these suggestions:

Smallest Walkie Talkies Ever – £9.95

Every boy or man loves a walkie talkie. It’s a great aid for when he’s pretending to be a secret agent / baddie / soldier. All men do that, right? No? Maybe just my other half then…. Either way, he’ll love these little walkie talkies.

They are not only the smallest walkie talkies around, they can penetrate walls, floors, steel and concrete and will transmit over a range of about 100 feet. Perfect for that James Bond training. Just don’t buy them for someone too young, they might ask you why you don’t just use a mobile phone and you won’t really have a good answer.

Handy also for that those geeks who would like to work someday for Her Majesty’s Secret Service…

Spy Camera Pen – £34.99

This camera pen will record video and photos in HD. Perfect for recording villains whilst they are confessing to monstrous crimes…or maybe just Auntie Mabel owning up to eating all the Quality Street.

Build Your Own Robot Arm – £33.50

Do you know a lazy geek? Do they struggle even to lift a cup of tea to their lips? If so, this could be the perfect present for them. Building your own robot arm is quite simple, but teaches them about basic robot technology and control systems. It’ll help your geek reach their tea and also broaden their skills. Can you ask for more?

You can? Ok then…. How about these….

Red Apple Crystal Puzzle – £8.74

Love giving people frustrating presents? Do you sit there with a satisfied grin watching them squirm as they try to work something out? Me too! This puzzle contains just less than 50 pieces that interlock within each other, which looks pretty easy, doesn’t it? No. It’s guaranteed to have your poor presentee crying into their cranberry sauce.

Pixel Oven Mitts – £14.99

These are a favourite of mine. If your geek loves a bit of cooking, or just doesn’t want to burn his or her hands taking a ready meal out of the microwave…these pixelated lovelies will protect your hands like any other over mitts, but you’ll also look super cool*.

* to other geeks

I hope that helps you get something appropriate for that poor geek in your life. I’m sure they’ve already got enough bad Christmas jumpers. Don’t give them another one.
