A few months ago Culture Vulture asked me to pop along to Bradford Playhouse and give you lovely readers an idea of what this unique venue is about.
Researching and writing ‘Beatles Mania hits Bradford Playhouse’ was a delight and inspired me to put my money where my mouth is and actually organise a gig there myself!
‘This isn’t a place where we provide entertainment for you to come and watch, it is about all of us owning it together and it belongs to everybody. We are you, you are us.’ Eleanor (then Director of Bradford Playhouse) told me back in May.
I couldn’t resist the challenge, the venue really is fantastic and where better to cut my teeth in gig promotion? But it’s not just any old gig, it will include (in no particular order) home-made cake, bunting, vintage slides, fairy lights, Pimms, and fantastic music.
So, Ladies and Gentlemen (drum roll please…) I present to you a Summer Party with Pimms and homemade cake and featuring Yorkshire’s finest summer bands on Friday 9 July.
Quack Quack: Likened to all sorts from Can to Fela Kuti to Kraftwerk and most recently as ‘crafting some of the finest instrumental music since Tortoise‘s ‘Millions Now Living Will Never Die” (The Silent Ballet review) and bringing ‘a welcome freshness to the fringes of jazz’ (All About Jazz review) Quack Quack don’t actually settle for any form of easy definition.
Their first album, ‘Slow as an Eyeball’ came out in May and continues to gain fantastic reviews, including 5 out of 5 in The Leeds Guide and air play on Freak Zone (6 Music), Huw Stephens (Radio 1) and Late Junction (Radio 3). But all you really need to know is that this is damn good fun music, played to sweet perfection, and it will make you want to dance.

Cissy: Cissy are an unlikely meeting of Post-punk and Afrobeat. They take elements of Eno-era Talking Heads, synthpunk pioneers The Units, Chicago street corner hustlers Heroic Doses and Fivestyle, and mix it up with contemporary influences from bands like Mahjongg and LCD Soundsystem. The result is astonishingly good music that radiates polyrhythmic beats. A first album is in the offing and Cissy are heading off on a UK tour on 17 July.

Bands will finish in time for the last train back to Leeds (12:37am) but the Playhouse stays open until late!
