Back in September I previewed another Pavilion event, a multi-site screening of work by French artist Aurelien Froment.

I went along, on what feels now like possibly the last night of warm weather, and was totally blown away. I loved the format – starting at Temple Works we watched a bizarre but engaging film of a man talking and walking through a modernist eco-city in a remote American desert.

The utopian vision and future-thinking ethic chimed perfectly with the history of the Temple Works building whose loading bay we were sat in.

The tour continued through Leeds Bridge, Hyde Park Picture House and Millennium Square, making full use of the DVD player on the coach to show further works by the artist.

But I’m actually meant to be introducing the next gem in Pavilion’s programme, a two night event with renowned philosopher Simon Critchley in conversation with writer and designer Will Holder.

A few months ago I spent an evening listening to a recording of a lecture by Critchley, I was intrigued and incensed – all at once. I wonder if I will have to sit on my hands or bite my lip when he comes to Leeds?

At the first event, from 6 to 7:30pm, 15th November, Critchley will lecture on his current thinking which centres around “faith of the faithless, a belief for non-believers that insists that the utopian impulse in political thinking is not dead.” He is particularly focused on overcoming nihilism.

On the 16th November from 6 to 8pm, Holder will read a lecture by Alice Notley. Doctor Williams’ Heiresses examines the bond with her grandfather and his role in her finding her female voice. Holder re-animates this lecture, bringing it off the page.

See you there!
