The work of Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra evokes both a sense of childish delight and tactile wonder. Paintings, illustrations on items found in numerous charity shops and sculptures go towards an eclectic body of work that is influenced by a wide range of popular culture. At first glance Heimka’s would appear to be ultra cute – you could even be forgiven for believing that some of it was twee – but a closer look reveals a dark world of anthropomorphism and grotesque creatures.
The beautifully packaged book Rock Candy, available now from Fantagraphics, presents Hiemstra’s entire life and career within one volume. In addition to over 100 gorgeous reproductions of her paintings and illustrations, Rock Candy includes photographs and reproductions of her studio, her influences, her family and much more. The book also includes an interview with Hiemstra, statements about the works by the artist and many other surprises and treats.
Rock Candy is published by Fantagraphics and is available from all good bookstores and online. You can also buy it direct from the Turnaround website HERE.

Debbie Harry – She’s still got it…even if it is in a sexy Granny way
Pink – she’s true to her self and her music in an industry that wants to pigeonhole artists. Also, her live shows are incredible – how many singers can perform a note-perfect version of a song hanging upside down 20ft in the air?!
Prince! Still brings the funk, even though he’s now a born again Jehova’s Witness.
Kylie Minogue – she still looks and sounds great!
The Beatles. They should be the definition of popular music! Not only is their whole back catalogue immensely impressive, they’ve paved the way for many future artists.
Paul McCartney
Warhol – much copied, universally recognised, he just IS pop art.
George Michael
Michael Jackson
Sexy Rod Stewart he just seems to keep going!
Excellent songs over the years.
Madonna is the Queen, but wish she would cover her bits up now as it makes me feel sick!
Adam Ant ~ without a shadow of a doubt THE best and sexiest man ever to walk the planet.
…but if you’re talking ART then it has to be Andy Warhol, a total legend
It must be Michael Jackson!
Michael Jackson
Alice Cooper….the king of shock rock…HE DID IT FIRST!!!!
Pop is not really my thing…but if I had to choose I would listen to George Michael. That man can sing!!
