“A” Level student Emily Shaw went to see “Saturday Girl”, an exhibition of Casey Orr’s photography at Gallery Munro House on Saturday …
Last Saturday I went to see Casey Orr’s brilliant ‘Saturday Girl’ in The Gallery at Munro House. The project is described by the Leeds based but USA born Orr on her website as ‘a series of portraits of young women specifically as seen through their hairstyles.’ There are dozens of portraits, all of different women with very different hairstyles, taken in a pop up studio in Leeds against brightly coloured backgrounds.
Personally, I found the exhibit to be a brilliant idea and series of images. It demonstrates beautifully the vast variety of styles around Leeds – there were various hair styles, colours and lengths, different tattoos, piercings and jewellery. The images show different style influences taken from different eras, and clearly express how good us girls are at expressing ourselves! I’m not quite sure that my GCSE in photography can compete with Orr’s ability or this series of images…
I hadn’t been to the Gallery at Munro House before this weekend, but I would definitely go again. There are wide white walls and big windows that allow lots of light in, perfect for viewing art. Attached to Cafe 164, it’s possible to view an exhibition with a cup of tea and slice of cake. Munro House is also easy to get to as it’s directly opposite the bus station, which is unusually convenient for those of us who rely on public transport!
Be warned though, this exhibition will more than likely make your hair feel inadequate. It definitely made me want to spend more time working on mine!
‘Saturday Girl’ is at Gallery Munro House until the 31st of March, and I would recommend hurrying along to see it! You can find out more about Casey Orr’s ‘Saturday Girl’ at www.caseyorr.com/saturday-girl.php or pop into the gallery to have a look, any time 10-6, Monday to Saturday.
