RECON Festival: 5 Key Events

20 September 2013 Phil Kirby Festivals

– ONEOHTRIX

The Mirrored Hammer: RECON Special Part 2 by Andyabbott on Mixcloud

RECON, the week long music, arts and film festival starts Sunday (22nd September). It’s a wonderful mix of free and paid for events. The idea of Recon stems from a venture between MAAP, Opera North, Lumen and Leeds Art Gallery from back in 2011. Ways of Hearing was a Sound and Music project brought together by the aforementioned partners. That identified the desire for a festival in Leeds.

The collective of James Islip (Lumen), Andy Abbott (University of Bradford) and Tom Hammond (Leeds College of Art) lead the steering group for RECON.

The result is  a collaboration between Lumen, M@BU and Room 237 in partnership with Leeds Film, The Brudenell Social Club, Cops and Robbers, Now Wave, Sheepscar Light Industrial, Leeds City Council, Opera North, Hyde Park Picture House and with generous support from Leeds Inspired, University of Bradford and Arts Council England.

So much is going on but we have picked 5 key events.

@ReconFestival

5 Key Events:

1. 36 Drummers / Black Pus – One Day two HOT events

36 Drummers? Outside? Hope the weather is ok. Start at Victoria Gardens at 3pm. “What we talk about when we talk about drums” is a 36-drummer installation of female and male drummers from the North of England. It will take place from 3pm in Victoria Gardens (outside Leeds Art Gallery) on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. The ensemble will be led by Leeds-based drummer Neil Turpin (Bilge Pump, Polaris, Yann Tiersen). FREE EVENT

Up at Leeds Brudenell you have Black Pus. Black Pus is Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer. Hand picked by Bjork and The Flaming Lips as a collaborator. Hot property indeed. Mix this with Dan Friel and Leeds’ own 10 year anniversary kings That Fucking Tank = 1 Hot night!

Date: 22nd September. Victoria Gardens and Leeds Brudenell

3. Oneohtrix (main picture)

3 very very good bands. Oneohtrix Point Never + Cut Hands + Helm. OPN is touring ahead of the release of his new album. Heavily praised by the thinking press, WIRE, Guardian and Fader etc. Modern electronic music at it’s best. Helm deliver landscape music set to drones and uncomfortable sound poetry whilst Cut Hands has featured on critically acclaimed documentary films. Genuine sound experiments = a special night is in store.

Date 26th September. Howard Assembly Rooms

Tickets from Grand Theatre Box Office

4. Lessons From Gulam: Asian Music in Bradford // The Five Star Family Elan

Two events kind of linked. Lessons From Gulam is a film made in 1986 about the Asian music community in Bradford at that time. The film maker Professor John Baily will introduce the film and do a Q + A. This links to The Five Star Family Elan which is part of a special commission from RECON. Featuring The Family Elan collaborating with South Asian musicians. Allowing Qawwali musicians to crossover and collaborate with rock and experimental musicians.  Expect more from this than meets the eye.

Date 24th September. Delius and Cultural Centre, Bradford. 7pm.

Date 27th September. Delius and Cultural Centre, Bradford. 7pm.
