Is it even Christmas if you haven’t been to a pantomime with your family at least once in December, asks Jhanvi Charkhawala?
With popcorn in hand, I headed to the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, to enjoy this year’s production of Peter Pan—and what a treat it was!
From the moment it began in the Darlings’ cozy bedroom with Wendy, John, and Michael, the show had me captivated. And let’s not forget their pet dog, the beautiful, fluffy star of one of the cutest cameos I’ve seen to date.
With Peter Pan at his adventurous best and a jealous yet endearing Tinkerbell, the production was a delight for kids and adults alike.
Nathan Morris returned to the stage as the lovable comic lad, playing Pirate Starkey on Captain Hook’s ship, the Jolly Rancher. Throughout the play, the audience became his guide, guiding him with cheers and laughter.
Andrew Pollard shone as the hilarious Mrs. Smee, the dame who somehow found herself on Captain Hook’s crew, assisting in the villain’s plot to capture Peter Pan and the Lost Boys in Neverland.
Molly Jane (Wendy) and Kieran Morris (Peter Pan) shared an enchanting chemistry that transported us all to the magical world of Neverland. Aled Thomas Davies brought flair and humor to the menacing Captain Hook, while his dynamic with Mrs. Smee was a masterclass in comedic banter and slapstick.
Lucy Hamilton-Dewhirst was an absolute delight as Tinkerbell, capturing her innocence, mischief, jealousy, and humor in equal measure. Meanwhile, Siân Gentle-Green as Rainbow exuded a calming presence with her poised and heartfelt delivery.
The production dazzled with its extravagant backdrops, stunning lighting, and show-stopping musical numbers—hallmarks of the Victoria Theatre’s consistently high standards.
From the sight of Peter Pan and Tinkerbell soaring through the sky to the mesmerizing scenes of ships, oceans, mermaids, and even the crocodile stalking Captain Hook, the visual spectacle was nothing short of magical.
And of course, what’s a pantomime without a little mess? A hilariously chaotic baking scene saw Mrs. Smee and Pirate Starkey covered in cream, only for things to escalate with water guns—not just on stage, but aimed at the audience too!
This pantomime isn’t just a comedy; it’s a celebration of a beloved English tradition. For anyone unfamiliar with pantos or those who know them inside out, Robert Marsden’s Peter Pan is an unmissable experience.
Running in Victoria Theatre, Halifax till 5th January.
