We read in the Sunday Times recently that the trend for Cupcakes is so OVER! Whoopies are the next big thing apparently! However try telling that to @cupcakeleeds @alabamacupcakes @sunshinebakery and many other aficionados of the plump petit gateaux as here in Leeds there are at least two competitive cupcackle challenges. First up is Iron Cupcake Challenge, a once monthly challenge held in the fantastic Adelphi every second Sunday. With previous challenges involving Retro Sweets, Booze, and Citrus Fruits this is one giddy event for master/mistress bakers…
The Hifi Club in Leeds has an event on this Saturday 24th April preceding the Mad Hatters Tea Party at the Faversham, the theme being ‘The Seven Deadly Sins‘ The criteria? Take cakes that are full of Wrath, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy and Gluttony. As sinful and extravagant as possible.
The ticket price of £4 Includes free entry to Funk Soul Nation/Boogaloo or Stereotypes at Wire Club . Buy tickets here
If you can’t think of a sin to make then bake Alice In Wonderland cakes and get free entry to the official afterparty, at The Faversham. There are prizes to be bagged along with the feeling of smug satisfaction that you have made others party to your sinfulness…
To enter cupcakes into the competition you need to bake a minimum of 10. You can enter more than one type of cupcake, but there must be at least 10 of each, so all judges can sample them. Email [email protected] with your name, email address and phone number to register. YOU MUST REGISTER TO BAKE.
There will also be a VERY SMALL clothes exchange. (For those you can no longer fit in to due to licking out the bowl a few too many times) All clothes must be dropped at at The Faversham in advance in exchange for vouchers to be used on the day. If you bring clothes on the day there is a maximum of 5 items. This is just to keep the event as controlled as possible. This part is in association with Angel Shares Vintage Fair currency from one can be used the other so go go go!
This is the last cupcake competition HiFi will be doing – so don’t wait until next time.
For the record, I’ve been saying for aaggeess that the next thing will be French Macarons. Bet you!
Sophie, I think you are right, Macarons are going to have a bit of a fad soon, its already brewing. Never mind about cupcakes… LONG LIVE THE FAIRY BUN!
