Anyone who has previously had the good fortune to attend an event by Leeds art collective Black Dogs will be able to testify that there is usually lots of noise, raucousness, a good dose of ridiculousness, the booze inevitably flows a little too easily and a damn good time is had by all.
I have witnessed people paying to stroke a puppy, competing to make the best zine, dancing dressed as fairies, and recently Black Dogs built a pub in the Tate’s Turbine Hall during No Soul for Sale, a festival of independents.
So I can be genuinely effusive in my urging you to attend the ‘Audio Almanac’ party on Friday 18 June at The Brudenell Social Club, Leeds.
The evening will be your only opportunity to purchase the ‘Audio Almanac’ – a compilation of songs, music, recordings, collages and aural oddities from a whole host of folks including Gareth S Brown, Rory Macbeth, Stuart Bannister, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Vialka, Luke Drozd, Michael Burkitt, and Filthy Turd.
The contributors might only loosely associate themselves with the notion of being artists but you are invited to imagine the record as an exhibition on a turntable; listen closely, immerse yourself, commit an artistic act by listening.
Black Dogs (@blackdogsleeds), a militantly not-for-profit art collective, will be selling the self-published ‘Audio Almanac’ for the cost price of £11.98 and it is released in a limited edition of 300, on white vinyl with a 12” booklet and free CD version; due to licensing restrictions it must be bought in person on the 18th June.
In the spirit of all their outings, they’ll be sharing their enthusiasm, ideas and general alternatives to the capitalist trajectory throughout the evening.
You can win prizes by partaking in musical quizzery, see a visually enhanced playback of the ‘Audio Almanac’, listen to loud music that will make you want to dance and drink.
If you arrive early, you can play Table Football World Cup but the party will properly kick-off after the England – Algeria match has finished (which you can watch at The Brudenell too, in case you were wondering!).
Live music will be in the form of beautiful electronic compositions from Gareth S. Brown (Canvas, Hood and The Unpleasants) using laptop and keyboard. And the Black Dogs ensemble who will demonstrate that anyone can and will play music!
Black Dogs ’Audio Almanac’ party takes place on FRIDAY JUNE 18th at the Brudenell Social Club, Queen’s Road, Leeds, LS6 1NY. 8pm – late. FREE ENTRY!
Black Dogs are offering one lucky Culture Vulture reader the opportunity to win an Audio Almanac, if you can answer the following question:
‘How many revolutions per minute are there in everyday life?’
Send your answers to [email protected] before 12pm on Friday 18 June. The answer will be revealed on the night, come down and find out if you’ve won!
