Following his own advice Lego Tourist spent the weekend parading up and down the Leeds-Liverpool Canalside at the annual Leeds Waterfront Festival. Starting at Granary Wharf he was a little put out that he wasn’t big enough for the WOW Balls but soon got over his disappointment by watching others struggle to find their canal legs in the giant inflatable water balls.
A jaunt on the swan pedalo was a good vantage point to watch the hive of activity taking place. From the pop-up Bird’s Yard shop neatly tucked away in the arches to canoe lessons, origami classes and giant Jenga, it was all going on and Lego Tourist didn’t know what to try next! He did however spot Indie Ices in the corner and decided to have a slurp on traditional Indian Kulfi and made a plan to start at Clarence Dock where the annual Dragon Boat Race was a photo finish.
The crowds were lining the banks of the dock and photographers were out in force as teams took to the water. Being small and mighty Lego Tourist managed to shoulder his way for a front row seat as the races got underway. Clarence Dock was packed with people cheering and Lego Tourist’s skills with camera sorted out a heated debate from the men in blonde wigs as their race was a close call.
Leaving the crowds and cheers behind there was a slow-paced meander along the canal to Brewery Wharf, usually a hive of activity but even more so this weekend. Salsa lessons gave way to way stalls crammed full of beads, jewellery, prints, crafts and yet more yummy food. Always one for the ladies, Lego Tourist momentarily lost his train of thought with lovely ladies from the Marvellous Tea Dance Company, until his guardian took him to cool off back down by the canal where he discovered the beautifully restored Syntan barge.
A lovely gent named Barry helped him aboard and gave him a guided tour of the boat, cared for and restored entirely by a group of volunteer barge enthusiasts. The tour even included VIP access up the steps to the cabin and roof of the vessel. Barry was quite taken with our little yellow friend and we weren’t entirely sure he was going to let him back on dry land, but thankfully he did and Lego Tourist hot footed it back to Granary Wharf just in time for an appointment with Dave the characaturist.
