Minicine’s Uncharted States of America – Armley Mills, 22nd March, 6.45pm

hohokam-2Minicine programmer Woody (Twitter – @MawScrawl) lets you Culture Vultures know what their screening entails this month, and that tickets are now open to the public.

So, after a month where we took a little trip to Leeds Town Hall and geeked out over Leeds Film’s screenings of North By Northwest, The Red Shoes, Don’t Look Now and The Big Lebowski, March sees Minicine return to Armley Mills’ Palace Picturehouse.

With Bradford International Film Festival (BIFF) on the horizon (April 19th – 29th) we thought we’d take the opportunity to showcase their Unchartered States of America (USoA) strand.

This month you’ll be able to see not one but two featurettes previously screened at BIFF’s USoA, Hohokam and Lay Down Tracks (see bottom of post for brief synopses) . If you’re a Minicine regular and were in attendance for Littlerock you’ll already have an idea of what to expect from USoA’s underseen gems of American independent cinema. And if you haven’t been fortunate enough to make it along to our screenings before, this is as good an opportunity as any to check out what we’re all about; a commitment to bringing some of the best independent cinema to the greatest 26 seater picturehouse in The North. And don’t forget about the homemade cake.

The screening will be held on Thursday 22nd March and full details can be found here

Tickets are available to the public as of this morning and are available here. Word to the wise, our last two screenings sold out within two days so don’t waste any time booking because if history has taught us anything, the last remaining tickets won’t last long!

If you’d like to know more about minicine membership and how you can gain access to tickets before everyone else please visit our membership page at miniminicine.com.

I think that covers everything for now, but if you have any questions you want to ask us we are on Twitter @miniminicine and Facebook.

We look forward to seeing you on the 22nd.

Hohokam (Frank V. Ross 2007)

Lo-fi filmmaking, utilising very raw characters that ooze with sincerity and a naturalism that makes them thoroughly engaging. The film successfully shows a convincing and sweet relationship that – like people – isn’t simple and easy to define, but full of beautiful complexities.

Lay Down Tracks (Brigid McCaffrey and Danielle Lombardi 2006)

Believably earnest depictions of various slices of unrepresented America, with similar themes of constantly being on the move, of being defined by what you do and of being comfortable with your life. Dislocation of sound and image serve to imbue this documentary with a poetic rhythm, which is aided by some of the most unpretentious, sage like commentary on the individuals’ own lives, which has an enchanting working class matter of factness.
