Don’t Make Promises You Can’t Keep …

broken_promises

I must not make promises.

I must not make ridiculous promises.

I must not make ridiculous promises on Twitter.

I must not make ridiculous promises on Twitter when they are plainly going to be broken the next morning.

I must not:

a. Allow myself to tweet late at night when my mental capacities have been corrupted by whatever amount of intoxicating liquor I managed to wangle that evening.

b. Forget that under the influence of said inebriation the part of my brain that regulates the reality checking faculties becomes entirely disengaged from the synapses that spout the nonsense. Tests have shown that this is a genuine medical disorder and that I suffer from verbal incontinence. I need pads.

c. Say that I will write about positive thinking (or feminism, or the transport systems of our great Northern cities, or competitive sport, or the latest exhibition at the trendiest new gallery, or opera, or whatever the heck I happened to be tweeting about till gone midnight) at seven in the morning, because, when seven in the morning arrives, sober and severe and demanding to be met with some new evidence of editorial effort, I generally find myself without a clue what to do.

d. Think that just because I can rattle out some words that have a small resemblance to standard English sentences and the vague sound of sense about them I should carry on for five hundred more … so I’ll stop.

  1. Phil, this seems like half a story. I’m intrigued. What was the terrible promise you made that could not be kept? I don’t generally have a problem with people not keeping promises, as long as they’re consistent about it. I have friends who always do what they say, and friends who rarely do, and that’s all fine, I plan accordingly. The only problem is when they forget which group they belong to, that’s when it gets messy.

    1. Hi Terry, fancy seeing you here.

The promise was to write something about positive thinking by the following morning. I start writing at 7 and try to post around 8 … the promise was reckless. I couldn’t even make up any of my usual nonsense, though I amply made up for the deficiency today.

      See you soon.

      1. Phil, you’re amazing – apparently you penned that response to my comment at 8.43 a.m. – four hours before I even
wrote my comment at 12.34 a.m! No wait……ok I just worked it out. Anyway I read the piece on positive thinking and it was very funny! You should amke more promises!
