If you are a regular reader, contributor or editor of our fine blog, you’ll know we care passionately about people having a go, being creative, writing, sharing, having a voice. As a multi author blog our passion is to facilitate and develop cultural and creative connectivity via our site. We’ve also hosted numerous bloggers events across Yorkshire for our contributors and other bloggers. Most recently we’ve teamed up with Creative Tourist in Manchester along with Kate Feld of writing organisation Openstories and founder of the Manchester Blog Awards to develop a Blog North network. So it’s fair to say, we’re really excited that the awards that were previously the Manchester Blog Awards are now the Blog North Awards. So that means any of you with blogs across the North can nominate or be nominated into the following categories.
We don’t want to get all competitive, but we know that there’s a rich seam of blogging talent across Yorkshire, The North West and North East. And we want to chivvy the Yorkshire/North Eastern bloggers to get nominated. Come on, we can’t let Liverpool’s sassy Double Negative website cajole their Scousers into submitting and not get you lot entering. So do us a favour and get your blogs or those you admire nominated. There are ace judges (more below) and fantastic prizes to be won, along with the accolade of being considered by your visitors friends and family to be the bees knees. You’ve got until midnight 7th September.
We’ll be getting a mini bus or something (tour bus?) sorted for the awards evening too, so what are you waiting for?

There are seven categories for 2012. You can enter multiple categories if they’re relevant to your blog.
Best city or neighbourhood blog:
Keeping it local? This category is aimed at metroblogs and hyperlocal news sites, and any blog focused on life in a specific town, city or area.
Best personal blog:
If you’re writing a blog based on your personal experiences this is the place for you. Whether you’re posting about the joys of parenting, living with illness, looking for work or simply reflecting on your day-to-day life, this category has the tagline ‘based on a true story.’ Your story.
Best writing on a blog:
This category recognises excellent writing, plain and simple. Blogs publishing original creative or critical writing will certainly be considered, but a blogger posting about anything could be in the running. As long as the writing is consistently of a high standard, we don’t mind what it’s about.
Best food and drink blog:
Calling all foodies. This is the category for cooks and restaurant reviewers, food writers, wine and beer bloggers and even people blogging about growing, producing or making food. Dig in!
Best arts and culture blog:
This is the place for people blogging about every flavour of culture, including film, theatre, music, art, design, photography, architecture, television, fashion and books. Highbrow or lowbrow, enter here if you’re an artist blogging about your practice, a culturehound blogging about what you’ve seen, heard or read, or a cultural critic doing serious reviews.
Best specialist blog:
Are you a bit of an anorak about something? Come on in. Whether you write about crafting, technology, beauty products, buses, social media or FC Rovers on your blog, all specialists are equally welcome here.
Best young blogger:
This category will be open to any blog written by someone under 23 (as of 17 October 2012).
And look who we have as our esteemed judges…
We’re very happy to announce the judging panel for the 2012 Blog North Awards:
- Stuart Maconie, author, journalist and and broadcaster
- Meg Pickard, head of digital engagement at Guardian News and Media
- James Brown, editor of Sabotage Times and previously, Loaded and GQ magazines
- Claire Malcolm, chief executive of New Writing North and Durham Book Festival
- Mike Pinnington, co-founder and editor of Liverpool online arts magazine The Double Negative
- Zoe Margolis, author and blogger, Girl With A One Track Mind
We’re frankly delighted that these fine people are all willing to contribute their time to the competition, and think they represent a pretty impressive concentration of smarts about blogging, writing, culture (northern or otherwise) and the digital world. In fact, we couldn’t think of anyone we’d rather have as our first ever judges.
The best of the nominated blogs will be put in a shortlist. Winners will be determined by tallying the results of public voting with the judges’ selections, and all will be revealed at our evening event on 17 October at The Deaf Institute in Manchester. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for you.
I nominate my own blog – The Real Supermum Blog – My rather inspiring blog takes you into the deep inside world of real life parenting and mental health and meet some very brave and inspiring mothers along the way.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar in November 2008 when I was 4 months pregnant with my 6th child.
My days are filled talking and supporting mothers with mental illness, who self-harm, have addictions, struggle to cope with debt, have experienced sexual abuse and many other real life issues. The one thing we all have in common despite our past, our ages our nationality is; we are all mothers battling with depression or past trauma yet still fighting to be the best mothers we can be to our children.
I hope the blog will not only shock you, reduce you to tears, amaze you, inspire you but also prove to you that mothers with mental illnesses can still be supermums.
I hope that one day the stigma of mental illness will vanish, until then I will be the voice that speaks out for those too afraid to do so alone.
I’m based in Leeds and run a music blog called ‘Keep or Cull’. It is a personal meditations on life and music. For every CD in my collection I write a review and decided whether or not to keep it.
I also edit a showcasing website for creative types called Art Fist http://www.artfist.org
Thanks
I would like to thnkx for the efforts you’ve put in writing this web site. I’m hoping the same high-grade web site post from you in the upcoming also.
