Featuring; Matt Hodson & Yule Bringer
Thursday 19th April
6pm – 9pm

111 Water Lane,
Holbeck Urban Village
LS11 5WD

Our penultimate ‘Catch-Up’ event is coming up on Thurs 19th April. A couple of events have passed since my last post, we featured a couple of Leeds based creatives Liam Henry & Matt Saunders on 16th Feb. On March 15th we had Joe Gilmore (better known as Qubik) & Joel Evey an L.A. based Art Director for Urban Outfitters. I’d like to write more about the people involved, but it doesn’t seem sensible giving you my view (I’d be writing an essay), you can do your own catching up on our dedicated website and facebook, if you’d like to investigate.

Thursday April 19th will feature Matt Hodson (matthew–the–horse) & Yule Bringer (Adam Higton). Matt teaches on a couple of courses at Leeds College of Art, specialising in illustration and image-making. I’m led to believe he’s well liked and respected by his students. I often think, I would have loved to have had him as a teacher whilst studying – lucky students. Physically he’s a large man and as a large man, naturally able to manage more, in terms of delivering well rounded creative endeavor… science. He recently starred alongside Kermit the frog in ‘The Muppets’ (2012). Although he might be better known for his role as the main protagonist ‘Peter Bretter’ in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’, 2008, a movie which he also wrote. But seriously, Matt is a friend and an artist I admire and respect, extra so for his witty observational poetry, which is virtue to his candid & human perspective on living, being and working. His mark-making, image-making, idea-realizing abilities are next to none in my opinion. This is emphasized by his inclusion in this year’s ‘Pick Me Up’ exhibition at Somerset House, featuring some of the country’s top graphic artists.

cosmic christmas

Yule Bringer’s work fascinated me from the moment I first encountered it, which I believe was at Analogue Books a few years ago, but I can’t be sure. I purchased his ‘Yule Bringer’ zine published by Landfill Editions (Hugh Frost), who was coincidentally, my cohort back in the January Catch-Up event. Yule Bringer or Adam Higton, if you prefer, illustrates images based on Christmas, exclusively… I think!. Perhaps better described as a series of folklore forest characters embroiled in various, alternative christmas ceremonial scenarios. Adams’ images are intensely detailed and rich, the characters wide-eyed, fun and engaging – so much so they become a little unsettling. Mostly his images make me want to dive in and get involved in the fun time, which not many pictures / image-makers are able to do.

put on a gown that touches the ground

Matt informed me that him and Yule are collaborating on a CD of poetry & music, which willbe free to visitors. I’m very much looking forward to working with these chaps and seeing what they produce.
