Since we became resident workers in Holbeck our latest ‘Don’t give up the day job’ interviewee has felt more than a little stalked by us! It doesn’t help that a) we go to his ‘office’ pretty frequently to enjoy a post culture vulturing debriefing, b) he is amenable to a little gentle arm twisting for events we have been involved in, so with every inch he concedes we take a mile, and c) his company keep bringing out new things for us to try…
2. So Sam how did one so young end up owning a brewery?
We just thought that it would be something fun to do after leaving university really. Once we had decided that we wanted to do it, Leeds seemed the obvious choice as it presented a huge commercial opportunity to exploit the growing cask ale market.
3. Do you think you could organise the proverbial piss up?
To be honest, I would rather leave the organisiation of the piss up to someone else, that way I could just concentrate on the important bit – the drinking.
4. Other than Ale what really excites you?
Pineapples.
5. If you were an Ale what kind would you be and what would you call yourself and what kind of Ale would you make for us if the Culture Vulture wanted to be embodied in a bottle?
I asked my colleagues what sort of ale I would be and what they would call it but the answers were all too rude to print…. If the Culture Vulture was to be put in a bottle it would definitely have to be something strong but quirky with lots of personality!
6. What new stuff have you got brewing?
Our November seasonal ale is Hellfire, and at 5.2% is the strongest beer we brew all year. Saying that it is really light, crisp and very easy to drink! After that comes Ale Mary our Christmas special.
There isn’t one particular thing going on, but the pubs have loads of events planned in the run up to Christmas, so check their websites, or drop in for a beer!
