Toby Latham retrospective exhibition at Temple.Works.Leeds: from London to Myanmar

Painter Toby Latham returns to Temple.Works.Leeds after a journey to the secretive country of Myanmar/Burma. On November the 7th, 8th and 9th Toby will be presenting an exhibition of new work, part of a career retrospective that spans more than two decades. Toby studied at Harris Institute Lancashire, Manchester Metropolitan University, and Camberwell College of Arts London.

2014-8

From the bustle of train stations to the ethereal quality of light playing on beaches and gilded roofs Toby shows his current stunning work as part of a 40 piece exhibition: from early urban anomie from his first decade in London, to the liberation of his more recent forays from his current Leeds life into parallel worlds in South East Asia.

In Toby’s own words:

Over the years the human figure has become the focal point of my work. It represents my own state of existence amongst the world in which we live.

Later works during this period are symbolic of rejoice, hope, and recovery. These figures are a representation of how I perceive the world, as opposed to earlier works that were a reflection on how I perceived myself during that time.

The subject matter of this collection ranges from urban city environments to journeys in Asia.

The resulting images take on a dreamy atmosphere somewhere between reality and the imaginary, giving the mass bodies a sense of place and the viewer an opportunity to contemplate escape.
