Let the dance ignite you!

PheonixDanceIgnite

Phoenix Dance Theatre are coming home to Leeds and their much anticipated return will see them grace the stage at The Riley Theatre at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Ignite is a powerful mixed bill featuring four works by different choreographers, all under the Artistic Directorship of Sharon Watson who was newly appointed to this role in May this year.

We asked our friends at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance to give us a little teaser and here’s what they had to say:

Beast, by ex-Phoenix dancer Douglas Thorpe, takes a close look at rage, how we experience it and what happens when it seizes control of us. This is dance theatre at its most physical and extreme.

1976, by emerging choreographer Alesandra Seutin, explores how lives were altered when a group of children were shot dead in Soweto, South Africa, as they protested for their rights. Through dance and physical theatre this expressive work exposes the profound effect such a horrific incident can cause.

Class, constructed by Darshan Singh Bhuller in 2002, is a choreographed demonstration of Graham technique, giving the audience an interesting and rarely seen insight into the distinguished style of a Phoenix dancer.

Finally, Phoenix perform Watson’s own work In The Fast Lane finds the dancers relying on power and their personal relationship to the powerful. Time, pressure and speed become the basic rules of survival. When power is personal, alliances become crucial

Well, we think it all sounds fascinating and it certainly ignites our imagination. Performances will take place on Friday 6th November and Saturday 7th November at 7.30pm in The Riley Theatre. Tickets cost £10 (£6 concessions) and can be booked by calling the Box Office on 0113 219 3018.

However, one lucky reader can win a pair of tickets for the performance on 6th November by heading on down to the comments box and sharing with us their most embarassing dancefloor story. Good Luck!

Please be sure to read our terms and conditions which you are deemed to have accepted by entering! Winners will be picked by random so why not give it a go! Closing date: 10am on 5th November 2009.

  1. Upon hearing my favourite song running towards the dancefloor and then slipping and falling into the dancing masses!

  2. When I was about 10 I was at a wedding bash. Being an unhinibited 10 year old, I gladly graced the dance floor with the aim of showing off my moves to all the girls. In retrospect, my ‘moves’ weren’t so much moves. More like energetic randomness. I decided to do the ‘knee skid’ across the floor which was and apparantly still is a popular dance move amongst youngsters. Unfortunatly I haddened perfected the move and I lacked any kind of brakes. I skidded straight into my cousin Vicky and knocked her over like a bowling pin! She ended up with a bleeding nose and I ended up being grounded!
