You must have heard of Light Night Leeds right? If yes then scan on, If no then don’t feel left out, it’s time to get out! It’s a damned shame that Light Night happens just once a year in my opinion, although it does concentrate over 100 different creative activities across the City of Leeds. That kind of impact turns a Leeds into a magical place, recalibrating a typical Friday night from the drunken cavorting stags & hens, into a lively, surprising, colourful playground, where every Leeds citizen can reclaim the streets and experience their city in a most delightful way.
Realistically it’s not possible to expect the hundreds of artists and creatives to sustain this level of activity and energy year round, and the work that goes on behind the scenes is phenomenal. For a meagre budget Leeds is turned inside out. Hidden places are illuminated, walls become canvases, pools become performances, trees get knitted, screens become interactive games, streets are flash mobbed and so much more. You can download a Light Night Brochure, and there is talk of a useful map to help you plot your evening. One word of warning, it’s not physically possible to get around all 40 venues…would be great if there was a twitter hashtag and people uploaded their pictures across town.
In the run up to Light Night this week we will have a couple of little features to give you a flavour of some of the very talented people involved in making Leeds the most playful of cities.
I think it’s just #lightnightleeds
