Mik Artistik – Nearest and Dearest

mik

We have to confess a sweet tooth for Mik Artistik. Have you ever seen him? Sometimes he takes a drawing board out with him to a pub somewhere in Leeds, and will draw anyone with £20 odd quid onto a brown paper bag. I’ve seen him turn a hostile crowd into one eating out of his surreal Irish hands within next to no time. But mostly Mik Artistik is known for his hilarious performance – pure music comedy, counting amongst his legion of diverse fans Keith Allen, Mick Jones and the unwitting Jimmy Saville! (My one year old daughter Georgie loves him, despite his turning up 3 hours late for her birthday party with a bottle of Ouzo and a double CD)

This year with his band mates Jonny and Benson they covered nearly twenty festivals across the UK, they even got a proper dressing room at the Carling Festival. I’m confident that one day people will tout Mik Artistik as an overnight success!

And now he’s got an exhibition on in Bradford, brilliant. The exhibition, “nearest and dearest” is a collection of portraits, scenes about family, friends and interesting people on the edge of his life. He started the portraits three months ago with “horse head” which was a rather foul nickname he had at school (pictured) and then continued to paint odd neighbours, friends he has known for a while, and strangers who had a spark of something interesting.

It all kicks off on Saturday 3rd October, with a performance from Mik and his Ego Trip and a Cabaret featuring Misty Valentine. Get along to Bradford Playhouse for 7pm with £7.00 in your pocket – it will be money well spent.
