East Ardsley Colliery

The Colliery is said to belong to the NCB and thus the photo is post 1947. The winding gear is shown here. Robert Holliday & Son leased land from the Cardigan estate in 1872 in order to mine coal here. At its peak around 1899, it was the 11th ranking pit in Yorkshire. The original winding engine brass plates Eliza and Mary, dated 1974 are now in the John Goodchild collection at Wakefield Library. [NB-15]
