Review: RoB
My day started with my parents going to New Zealand till March next year and giving me my Christmas presents. Obviously I was told not to open them until December 25th…
I got to The Brudenell early. I had been at The Hyde Park Picture House beforehand to watch Loving Vincent (check it out). I did not think it was worth going home, even though I do literally live five minutes away (Don’t forget about those presents – Ed.)… It’s nice to have some beers beforehand. It’s Sunday. It’s the chill out day.
I only caught the last few songs of first support for the show – Glasgow based indie four piece LUCIA – but Did you see the drummer’s hair? * It was cool. The main support came from Norwich synth pop duo Sink Ya Teeth. They have some solid bass lines – imagine if Gary Numan had formed Portishead. * Pavement lyric – Ed.
Starting a party on a Sunday evening is never going to be easy, but if anyone is up to the job it’s !!! (pronounced chk-chk-chk). Lead singer, dancer and party inciter Nic Offer has a stage presence up there with the best. With some hip shaking to rival Elvis (Presley not Costello), he is also an avid wearer of shorts. I very much approve. Boooo to trousers – or calf shackles as I like to call them.
From the start, the show was high energy, but it continued to build with Nic coming out into the crowd several times and attempting to dance with every single one of us. I tried to move forward, but the sold out crowd of solid dancing bodies made it difficult. I stayed at the back along with the other toe tappers and head nodders.
Back on stage, their backing singer was doing some choreographed dancing along with Nic, barely hampered by the fact she was on crutches and spent most of the night sat on a stool. I’m not familiar with the track names, but all the hits were there. It was one party tune after another, all under a shower of lights getting bounced around the room by the mirror ball. WHAT A SHOW!
Talking with jubilant friends after the show, it did not feel like a normal Sunday night with a Monday morning of work looming. It was party time. I look forward to their return. You should all come along with your best dancing shoes.
!!! play tonight at Gorilla in Manchester. Tour continues
