Guest bloggers @southasianartuk give you a good reason to take Friday off with their Solstice Festival.
This Thursday, 21st June, is the longest day, where many gather across the UK to celebrate the Summer Solstice, most likely wearing wellies and an unsightly yet cosy fleece, because it is a British Summer after all. But if you’re up for an all-night challenge and looking for an excuse to fob the kids off on a friend to stay up through the night listening to beautiful South Asian music, get yourself down to Munro House in Leeds!
SAA-uk, a Leeds based charity who specialise in bringing classical and contemporary South Asian arts to participants and audiences, present their first Solstice Festival – certainly the first ever of its kind in Leeds, and possibly the UK. This unique celebration offers the chance to stay awake all night and enjoy often unheard rāgs from sunset to sunrise, enhancing the spiritual significance the Solstice has for many cultures around the world.
A magical evening is on the horizon, showcasing some of the finest Hindustani classical musicians from all over the UK including: Shaheen Khan, Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, Ustad Harjinderpal Singh, Dr Vijay Rajput, Khaviraj Singh, Bhupinder Singh Chaggar, Roopa Panesar and Shahbaz Hussain.
What better excuse to book Friday off work?!
