The Big Peruvian Party at Wharf Chambers

When an interesting event pops up, I usually dedicate at least 1-2 minutes researching it. For the Big Peruvian Party, taking place on Thursday 2 April at Wharf Chambers, however, I’ve found myself obsessing over trying to create the ultimate Peruvian pun; something including llamas or, er, Lamas (there’s gotta be something there…).

Luckily, my poor approach to prioritising tasks does leave the door open for the event’s organiser, Amber Hartley, to step in and explain the story behind it. I think you’ll agree she puts it far more eloquently than I ever could:

When I was young I just thought things would be the same forever, until my sister threw my favourite cat teddy, Fred, up a tree – I was devastated. A year later, I saw a de-fluffed mouldy cat dangling from the canopy. This was my first experience of losing something precious and seeing what the elements of this world can do to such fragile things.

Cancer has nearly affected everyone I know one way or another. I lost my best friend to lung cancer, she was my guide through life and helped me grow to the person that I am today, so for this I wanted to return the favour.

As a result of her experiences, Amber has set herself the dual challenges of raising £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Research and to trek to Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas (the trip is already paid for and all money raised goes to Macmillan). To help her achieve these goals, she’s hosting a Peruvian party the likes of which Leeds (I’m going to assume) has never seen before.

In addition to cakes, drinks and general Peruvian-themed antics, they’ll be music courtesy of Lilac’s Daughter, Sons of Great Men and Disraeli Gears as well live art being created throughout the night by local artists. If any of the pieces created take you fancy, you’ll even be able to bid on them at any point via a silent auction.

Finally, and most exciting of all, there’s going to be a prize for the best Peruvian pun. Feel free to enter but don’t be disappointed when I walk away as the clear winner.

The Big Peruvian Party takes place on Thursday 2 April at Wharf Chambers at 6.30pm, entry is £6 and all money raised goes to Macmillan Cancer Research.
