It promises to be a really good space. The building itself is quite spooky, especially for those of us who grew up around it in the 70’s, but after the initial uncanniness wears off it really does work as a studio complex. There was a very friendly welcome from the folks at East Street Arts. I got a guided tour and had a long natter with Daniel Lehan, the artist who was doing the United Project. He was a lovely bloke and persuaded me to contribute a daub of my own to the project. I had to pick a letter from the phrase “The thing we do on the day unites us,” and paint it any way I liked onto a piece of A4. Being a card carrying narcissist, I chose the letter “I”. He also asked me to fill in one of the response sheets with my own ideas. Fortunately I was allowed to use words for that and not my limited artistic ability. I didn’t manage to return the sheet to him today, but I’ll email it to East Street arts and put it on my website. I enjoyed the visit and I’ll certainly drop in again. The only downside for me was that I forgot to pick up the free beer . . . so if you’re listening ESA, you know where to find me.
I went along last night last night with Casey Orr and had a great time. Did not drink the beer, but have it on good authority it wasn’t half bad! Agree with Phil about the building, I always thought it was good damn ugly, but actually it seems to be a pretty cool space when you get inside. I felt quite warm about it by the end!
I got all fanciful and did a T letter for Daniel, have to say it looked very striking!
