What Would it be Like to Leave the Car at Home?

What would it be like to leave the car at home and travel by public transport?

It’s European week of Mobility next week. Culture Vultures has teamed up with West Yorkshire Metro to try a little experiment.

We are offering a Metro Card to a driver who dares be a little adventurous and spend a day or two getting around and about by bus, train or private chauffeur … fair enough, the last one’s a blatant fib, and we can’t quite stretch to the limo. But West Yorkshire is all yours to explore for the whole week provided you leave the car behind.

We’d like the lucky driver to keep a diary of what they saw and heard and felt and thought during their experiment with SVD (severe vehicle deprivation) – or positive public transport experience, depending on your point of view – which we’ll publish Friday to coincide with our Moving in the Right Direction transport conversation next Friday.

So, car drivers, who’s up for the challenge. How long can you handle? Who will be brave enough to manage more than a day or two? Get in touch below and we’ll sort out the Metro Card. And maybe a coffee, or a pint or two, after the ordeal is over … can’t say fairer than that.

  1. I have tried this and cannot make it work 🙁
To travel in from Penistone and to get back is a royal pain in the proverbial. Good luck with it though, I look forward to reading the outcome. Assuming that it already happened you will be posting the findings?
