Win a big night out on us at the Engine House & Opera North

engine house

Since we took up residence at nearby Temple Works we have been frequent visitors to The Engine House located in The Round Foundry, Holbeck.  We hasten to add, that the marathon munching sessions we regularly insist on,  have all been in the name of research on your behalf dearest reader! So after much deliberating (and testing of all the specials) we have decided that it is indeed a restaurant worthy of your patronage! In fact we would go so far as to say that if you have not already tasted their fresh, flavoursome fayre, you have missed a treat.

In return for a little effort on your part The Engine House are offering a 2 course meal for two, with a bottle of house wine.  Whilst we wont make you sing for your supper, we thought you should enjoy some stimulation from the new season at Opera North, in their best seats!* To take a look at what’s on click here.

*Subject to availability and opening times at The Engine House

All you need do is tell us what sandwich best represents you and why in the comments box below, making sure that when you do you enter your valid email address (it’s not visible to anyone other than us) by the 18th of September. The prize must be taken before the end of October 2009, and we would like you to provide a short review for our website!

To help you get started Catherine (pictured above with brother/co owner Jeremy) says she would be a chocolate spread, banana and peanut butter toastie, because she is sweet, messy and sometimes a little bit weird. Culture Vulture Michelle (an american retro queen) thinks she would be pastrami on rye with a pickled gherkin on the side, and I would be a dangerous danish blue cheese with onion because I am cheesy, cheeky and not for the faint hearted!

  1. I’d be a marmite, philadelphia and peanut butter sandwich in that granary bread with the cracked seeds on top.
I appear wholesome, but am certainly not to everyone’s taste – you either love me or hate me, I’m really a bit of a softy, completely nuts and totally cracked (!). You get the picture…?!

  2. I’d be wearing my lederhosen whilst chomping on a thinly sliced german sausage and sauerkraut sandwich on black as hell rye bread with mustard. Gud ja!

  3. i would be a houmous, Avacardo, grated carrot and caramelised onion chuckney open sandwich with Chips on the side, as i am well travelled and exotic, i can see in the dark, i am both sweet and sour, open minded and just a little bit naughty!

  4. i’d be a sausage, tomato sauce, mustard and onion in chunky white bread because sometimes i’m a cheeky sausage, a bit saucy, hot stuff, likes crying and a bit chunky if i eat one of these on a regular basis…

  5. Hi guys – it would have to be cream cheese and avocado with toasted pine nuts and a wee bit of baby spinach, on a multigrain torpedo roll, because of my multi-textured personality – gritty and hard on the outside and squidgey in the middle, with nutty tendencies. But overall generally good for you!

  6. I’d be brie, honey and rocket in a baguette because I’m a Francophile dreaming of a sweet trajectory to the stars…

  7. Roast lamb with mint sauce, in thick doorstops of white bread. Having researched my family tree, back to the 15th century & found lots of farmers & shepherds, this is probably the reason!

  8. Hi,

I would be a cheese baguette dressed in lettuce, shredded carrot, finely chopped red peppers with a sprinkling of finely sliced cucmber and sweet cheery tomatoes dressed in a lovely french vinaigrette because it would reflect my continential sweet charming cultured savoury side

  9. I’m american so I think it would have to be:

Juicy american hot dog with lots of yellow mustard.

    Why?
Because you just can’t improve on perfection – they just make me thing of summer, good times, and the 4th of July. I cannot deny my american roots!

  10. I would have:
Vegemite – (it reminds me of the only food I could afford when I lived in Australia)
Laughing Cow – (it reminds me of the only food I recognised when I lived in Belgium)
Tomato and cucumber – (I grow them on my balcony in Leeds)
On soda bread (it’s the only bread I can make!)
YUMMY – suddenly I’m hungry XX

  11. Hmmm…
    I’m a bit roly-poly, so I think I’d have to be a wrap.
Proud of my Irish roots lets make it green and put it in a spinach tortilla.
I’ve got a wee bit of a temper on me, so jalapenos would provide the bite.
But I’m a softie really so cream cheese to soften the blow and tomatoes for my sweet side.
I like to think I’m quite cool, so lets add some cucumber.
A woman of some substance I think I would need a meaty filling, and as I just can’t seem to ditch the evil weed, it had best be smokey bacon.

    1. Alice my dear the lovely folk at The Engine House decreed your woman of substance sandwich just perfect to go park yer bum and that of a guest at their table. I will contact you privately with details!

      1. Ooo I’ve won! Wow. Thank you thank you thank you. I look forward to receiving your email!

        1. I had as wonderful night at Grand Theatre for Opera North last night. Thank you again.
And I’m very much looking forward to sampling Engine House’s fare.
          xx

  12. I’d go for smoked salmon, cucumber and cream cheese on ciabatta because it’s cool, tasty and sophisticated. Just like me (not).

  13. I’d like to think I was like a toasted ciabatta with sun-dried tomatoes, avocado and feta cheese (tasty, slightly unexpected, a hint of the exotic).
In reality I’m probably more of a white bread egg butty. Boo hoo!

  14. Perfect sandwich for me is crunchy, hot, fishy and cheesy so it would probably be….

Tuna mayo with Swiss cheese and jalapenos on toasted granary bread

    YUM!
