Come and join the fun in the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) new national festival of architecture “Love Architecture” from 15 – 24 June 2012. The festival offers the chance for locals and visitors to get involved in a host of activities that celebrate the amazing architecture of the buildings, streets and neighbourhoods where we live, including many events specifically for children and families. The Yorkshire area has activities ranging from beer and architecture walking tours to architecture student exhibitions, from architectural photography scavenger hunts to a playful city workshop. In the meantime, here are a few tasters of what’s on offer in Yorkshire:

Leeds Pub and Architecture Trail
Take one of four self-guided architectural walking tours of Leeds and sample the best pints that Leeds Brewery has to offer. You’ll even be able to sample a special Love Architecture beer! The Love Architecture Leeds Pub and Architecture Trails are at www.lovearchitectureleeds.org and will be launched at the magnificent Garden Gate Grade II* listed pub on Thursday 14 June. Leeds Architectural Photo Hunt
23 June 13:00 – 15:00 Leeds city centre
Free
Bring your camera, friends and family and enter this fast-paced fun challenge. You have two hours in which to return armed with 50 images from a set list of architectural gems in Leeds city centre. Work in teams or on your own and meet with others outside Leeds City Museum at the end of the challenge to share your spoils in the café or the pub.

Guided Architectural Walk In Wakefield

Leeds Owl Trail
Throughout the festival, Leeds city centre

The famous Leeds emblem punctuates the public landscape of the city from the giant golden owls watching over Millennium Square to hidden locations where they’re least expected. With this family-friendly trail you can uncover a multitude of owls hidden in the architecture of Leeds and learn about the history of the city along the way.

Art Or Architecture? Creative Networks Networking Event

Picturehouses Present: Architectural Features – Metropolis at York City Screen

Picturehouses and RIBA present a national series of film events celebrating the special relationship between architecture and cinema at some of England’s finest independent cinemas. Metropolis will feature at York City Screen with an introduction from the York Architectural Association.

How Much Does Your Building Weigh Mr Foster?

The first feature film focused on the architect Norman Foster shows his journey from Manchester to a global practice. The film explores about the practice of architecture, why it matters, and how difficult it is to do it well.

Denis Mason Jones – A celebration of Sketching

Denis Mason-Jones was a distinguished Leeds architect, perhaps best known for his design of Bodington Hall, the University Hall of Residence. Throughout his adult life Denis kept meticulous notebooks, filled with sketches all in his very distinctive style. To celebrate and inspire people to pick up their pencils and sketch we present an exhibition of Denis’s beautiful drawings.

From St Pancras to Santiago (Calatrava)

Free
An exhibition of drawings in charcoal, pastel and conte inspired by architecture. The artist is fascinated by the repeat shapes and patterns of structures such as the roof girders of St.Pancras Station, fire escape ladders of New York tenement buildings, bridges and the buildings of Santiago Calatrava, which lead to strong visual images.

York’s Playful Spaces
Tickets: £10
A creative workshop under the guidance and inspired tutoring of established artist and educator Timothy Morrison. Observe York’s urban landscape, capture it through photographs, combine it with imagination and create 3D and 2D explorations of your York. All materials will be provided – just bring along your digital camera and creativity.
