Catalogue:
I contacted these chaps a couple of years ago, in admiration of their work and because I’d hoped that they’d be sticking around Leeds post-graduation. Luckily they did and they’ve been making themselves useful ever since. People might be familiar with the promotional material they created for ‘Woolgather Art Prize’ last year, and the identity design for ‘Loop Arts Fair’ I co-commissioned last summer, with collaborators Neil Owen (TestSpace) & Laura Wellington (Duke Studios). Aside from working commercially as designers, they run a publishing label called ‘Catalogue Library’ producing short-run zines, thematically whimsical these publications are a quick representation of a simple idea. For the first Catch-Up, Catalogue are going to be showcasing their latest series of books ‘Failed Attempts’, featuring a variety of practitioners from all over the globe. These guys seem effortlessly productive, seemingly derived from a genuine passion for creating. They’ve already established a bountiful amount of respect from peers across the country as well as doing a good job of contributing to Leeds art scene.

Catalogue have chosen to exhibit alongside FourFiveX:
Little known to me before Catalogue highlighted them, I can immediately see the connection Catalogue share with their German counterparts. Their practice, which is at times slightly obtuse, has a similar DIY done by a studious graphic designer feel to it as well as a similar visual sympathy. Their website simply features a set of tidy prints, in which they have commissioned various artists to contribute an image towards the range. This is what will be showcased at the opening. Dip into their blog and you’ll find a fascination towards drawing visual order to the everyday, categorizing and compiling found images as well as documenting their own typographic and visual experiments.

This should make for a really neat first show, both are exhibiting products of their interest in self-publishing. Although the show is dedicated to exhibiting this pair – the show will feature around 25 artists in total, counting for the contributions made to their independent projects by other artists. Their will be a wide range of exciting and thought provoking art.
On top of all this Out Of The Woods café, situated directly next door willbe serving hot food for low-low prices. Hot Dogs & Falafel. We’ll hopefully have some mulled wine on the stove too.
‘Catch Up’ is a series of events featuring Illustration, Graphic Design & Photography. We (Myself & Catalogue) have invited a small selection of our favourite artists (& chums) in the region, requesting them to select a peer they admire, practicing outside of Leeds to exhibit alongside them. The events will be taking place on the third Thursday, every month for six months.
Every show will feature a run of 50 zines, available to the first 50 attendees. The publications document work and information about exhibiting artists.
Each month I’ll be posting up details about the forthcoming exhibition.
Hope to see you there.
Really looking forward to the opening this Thursday!
