Guest blogger Michael shares his thoughts on our third Culture Vulture Social, hopefully he summed up the evening! Put March 4th in your diary for our next social, especially as it happens to be celebrating the Culture Vulture’s 2nd Birthday.

Spanish social event

Emma (Culture vultures) asked me to write a few words regarding the rather fantastic Spanish Social event held at The Emerald Room at Opera North, the Grand theatre last Friday the 14th.

I went with my friend Tom (@TWSY) & we joined the proceedings fashionably late, by which point most of the nibbles kindly provided by Salts Deli had been nibbled. No great surprise as the food was lovely. Salts Deli is somewhere I confess to not being familiar with, although I plan to change that very soon.

We enjoyed a rather smooth, very palatable glass of fine Rioja courtesy of the new wine bar Aglassto.

On first enquiry about the event I was not sure what to expect or what to pay for the ticket. I know Emma struggled with this too. Ask for too much and canny Leeds folk expect a lot in return, ask too little and you do not cover your overheads. When I asked Emma what to pay she suggested a very reasonable minimum donation which I was more than happy to pay.

But I wanted to give a little something extra to the event, as it struck me that lots of people had gone to lots of effort. So I put on my thinking cap, what could I offer ?

Simple, my photographic services to record the event. This seemed like the perfect solution in the newly formed big society. Give a little back. (hope you like my photos)

The film was introduced by Almodovar  expert Dr Duncan Wheeler, who very competently filled in the gaps in my knowledge base surrounding not only Spain’s revolution, but Almodovar too.

I had seen ‘Talk to Her‘ before, but it was a long time ago and only on the small screen. So the next couple of hours were superb.  The film was captivating, comical, dark and beautifully filmed.

Afterwards we continued on to the hippest new wine bar in town  Aglassto, to be treated to a Spanish dessert of smooth ice cream topped with a sweet Spanish sherry. I’m not a normally a fan of sherry, but this Spanish sherry is quite sublime.

After speaking to lots of lovely new people and chatting for far too long, (considering my early start the next day) we had to leave. This was in fact the only thing that spoilt what proved to be a superb cultural evening.

I can not wait for the next event.

Did you join us? What did you think? Did you blog about the film or the event, let us know in the comments box below.

  1. We had a lovely time, a good way to spend the first time we have been let off for good behaviour, and enjoyed chatting with you. First CV social we have been too and it certaintly was better than a night out at the local. Had a go at writing thoughts down about film, would love to read other thoughts.
