Next Wednesday 17th November at Leeds Art Gallery, we are teaming up with the Northern Art Prize to host  a cultural conversation ahead of the opening of the 4th prize exhibition. I say ‘we’ but personally I’ve been involved with the prize since it was a ‘plan’ and am more than a little biased!

We’d (back to plural) love it if you’d like to join us discover more about the prize, it’s a big deal, with £16,500 being awarded to the winner in January, we know from experience that there are a lot of questions about the artists, the prize, how it’s curated, who chooses the shortlisted artists and why, how it’s judged, why Leeds Art Gallery etc. So instead of filling up this blog post with our carefully managed answers we’d like you to come along and ask Leeds Art Gallery Curator of Exhibitions Sarah Brown, and Northern Art Prize Director Pippa Hale, pretty much anything you’d like to know more about.

Concurrently there’s a lovely tongue in cheek competition on, for the public to design Northern Art Pies, to be created and sold during the exhibition, with a percentage of the proceeds going to fantastic Leeds arts organisation Pyramid of Arts. Head over to the Northern Art Prize blog to find out more and have a go at winning with your sweet or savoury recommendation.

Those of you joining us at the ‘Behind the scenes’ event next Wednesday will be able to taste the four shortlisted ‘pies’ and be instrumental in helping choose the winning pie which will be announced at the official private view. We’ll be heading off to the Victoria & Commercial after the event for anyone who wants to continue the discussion after the event.

So if you’ve got the slightest curiosity about art, prizes, pies, competitions, why this is important in the North, and more please do RSVP here, we’ve got about 10 places left.
