A Rock Festival for Words. @BigBookend invites you to join them for a weekend of inspired words and adventure.
This festival is not just about books and reading, it’s about stories, creativity, fun, fantasy and facts.

We have something to offer all ages whether you are a Small Kid or a Big Kid. Come and meet your heroes and heroines on the page and in real life. All our authors will be available for book signings after each event.

For older readers, we have international, best-selling crime thriller novelist Peter James who opens our festival at the Carriageworks on Wednesday 13th June at 7pm. We have a real live Rock Star for our Rock Festival for Words. James Fearnley from The Pogues will be speaking at Waterstones on Thursday 14th June at 7pm. Over the weekend of 16th and 17th June, we have Jane Borodale, Gabrielle Kimm, Hallie Rubenhold, and Anne O’Brien taking part in a panel event looking at Women, Sex and History. Simon Jenkins is hosting a tutored beer tasting; Anthony Clavane and Mick McCann celebrate Leeds’ rich literary heritage.
Headlining and closing the Big Bookend festival is millions-selling, award winning Chocolat author Joanne Harris talking about her new book, Peaches for Monsieur le Cure.
Big Bookend Childrens LogoFor younger readers, we have the hugely popular Cathy Cassidy, author of the Chocolate Box series, brilliant Gillian Rogerson, author of You Can’t Eat a Princess,well known children’s illustrator Kate Pankhurst, for Dr Who fans, K9 and his operator Mat Irvine, of the Slime Squad, Cows in Action and Astrosaurs fame, Steve Cole and Anthony McGowan whose novel, The Knife That Killed Me, set in Leeds is currently being filmed in York.

  1. We had a wonderful event last night with Peter James who thoroughly entertained us all.He said, “It was huge huge fun and what a lovely audience. I’d love to come back!”

    Today it’s James Fearnley at Waterstones, 7pm and then on Saturday it’s Cathy Cassidy, Kate Pankhurst, Gillian Rogerson, Women, Sex and History panel event and then a tutored beer tasting with Simon Jenkins at Waterstones.
