Review: Walter Lemonface

I have always been blessed with a vivid imagination and being (arguably) an adult has certainly not done anything to dilute this aspect of my personality. One of the best things about being a parent, for me, is essentially having an excuse to have a second (not that my first ever ended) childhood. So with that in mind I was more than a little bit excited to attend a performance of 154 Collective’s Walter Lemonface in April at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Halifax.

Walter who?” you may ask. Walter Lemonface I will have you know is a dashing Adventurer, Purveyor of Purple Carrots and Spinner of Yarns. He has a head shaped like a lemon, lives in a purple shed at the bottom of a waterfall and stars in his own interactive show fusing storytelling, live music and live drawn animation.
Think Choose Your Own Adventure stories, but brought to life as an awesome sensory experience with vivid coloured scenes, audience participation sound effects and adventure around every corner.

My little boy and I loved every minute. It was utterly charming, flawlessly executed by the amazing animators, musicians and the narrator of the story who guided us seamlessly through Walter’s journey and managed to include every idea that the children in the audience called out, no matter how outrageous. From vampire chickens and rhubarb ogres to cheese pirates and flying tigers with dragonfly wings, there is no limit except the imaginations of your children. It was hilarious and adorable and I cannot recommend it enough. I have honestly never seen anything quite like this and I will without a doubt be going again. After all it’s hardly going to be the same story twice!
