Twitnic – a 21st Century Picnic

picnicGuest blogger @gazpachodragon invites you to an actual 21st Century Picnic to meet some of your virtual friends, on 4th June.

Every day I am amazed by the community on Twitter in Leeds. Whether it’s a supportive shout out or an invite to an event, I constantly feel as though my group of friends isn’t just the people I drink with, it’s also the people I talk to in 140 character bursts. In Leeds there’s also a lot of overlap, with a lot of twitter users embracing the vibrant community and setting up groups and events of their own, promoted via twitter.

Leeds has got the most active twitter community in the UK. I don’t know how whoever came up with that statistic measured it, but it certainly feels true. As an ex-Londoner and a previous Manchester resident, I can say with some authority that I feel most involved in Leeds, and that’s down to Twitter. People are friendly, knowledgeable, supportive; they’re just as happy to join in with making bunting for charity in the real world as they are to join in the #leedsfilms game online. Being involved in @peopleofleeds has shown me more and more how willing the tweeters of Leeds are to engage with people they don’t know, and how quickly someone can turn from a #followfriday to a friend.   That’s why we’re having a Twitnic. A twitter picnic of course! It’s a great way to meet those people you talk to all the time on twitter, or just to meet new people. We really want to celebrate the community that is Twitter in Leeds. Everyone on Twitter is invited, all you have to do is register for a ticket (just so we can keep an eye on numbers and get info to you for alternative plans if it rains!), then bring along a picnic!   If you have fun stuff (frisbees, guitars, bubbles wise. No fires or drugs please!), then bring that too. We’ll also be bringing games and goodies to share. If there’s a group of you, why not arrange a giant picnic to share – or why not bring a little extra to share with strangers? The picnic will be family-friendly, but there’ll also be areas to hang out if you’re not that keen on kids, so really there’s something for everyone. We’ll even be dishing out goody bags so you really feel like you’ve been invited to something special!

We’ll be meeting at 1pm on 4 June,  Millennium Square, Leeds then we’ll then head to our top-secret picnic location where we’ll while away the afternoon.

After Twitnic is wrapping up and the kids are heading to bed, we’ll be heading down to Dock Street Market for a very special afterparty, with drinks offers and Jubilee food available, and with special DJ guests to party into the early hours.

We’ve also got some brilliant sponsors who are helping to make sure that Twitnic is a really fun event – massive thanks to Gopher Deals, Call Lane Social, Verve, The Reform and Fabrication.
