Free workshops sessions over seven weeks
A fantastic opportunity over seven weeks to experiment with film and video. PSL are creating, with Lumen, a project space within PSL for artists to explore and develop their interest and practice in moving image. By joining in on some or all of the workshop activity you will gain hands on knowledge, opportunities to discuss artists’ moving image and produce work of your own. All workshops are run by professional artists. PSL are actively encouraging you to make experimental new works in this intensive period. These will then be exhibited to the public in their screening space, alongside the main exhibition I Can Still See You (17 March – 12 June). Workshops take place at PSL on Thursdays from 18 March.
Week 1 Thursday 18 March, 5.30-8pm
A comprehensive introduction to the world of Artists’ Moving Image by George Clark, independent curator to the BFI and the Independent Cinema Office, including a screening of selected works.
George Clark is a curator, writer and artist. He’s curated and presented projects across the UK with LUX, Independent Cinema Office, Tate Modern, ICA, Flatpack Film Festival and Frieze Projects among many others. Between 2006-2008 at the Independent Cinema Office he managed a range of projects including Essentials: The Secret Masterpieces of Cinema, Artist & Icons and The Artists Cinema 2006. He’s written on a wide range of artists and filmmakers for Art Monthly, Afterall, Sight & Sound, Senses of Cinema and Vertigo Magazine among others. He is currently working with Dan Kidner on a historical video art show based on the influential ‘magazine on videocasette’ Infermental, for Focal Point Gallery July – September 2010.
Week 2 Thursday 25 March, 5.30-8pm
Using video cameras – this session explores filming and basic lighting with amateur and professional digital cameras. A boost in demystifying some of the technology.

Week 3 Thursday 8 April, 5.30-8pm
Sound art is becoming a strong movement in contemporary art, but sound also plays a leading part for all video artists, such as Emily Richardson. Use this workshop to understand the use and importance of sound in your visual work.

Week 4 Thursday 15 April, 10am – 5pm
This practical, one-day workshop will explore 16mm film as a contemporary creative medium for artists and filmmakers, encouraging experimentation and collaboration.
The workshop will cover all aspects of DIY 16mm filmmaking:
• finding your way around the camera
• shooting on film – film speeds, light metering, focusing
• hand-processing techniques using a Lomo tank
• basic editing and accessible post-production processes
• learning how to use a projector

Week 5 Thursday 29 April, 5.30-8pm
Crossing media – using digital document & archive images for drawing and painting. Artist Judith Tucker will explore the work of contemporary artists who use stills from their own and archived video and photography for visual art practice.

Week 6 Thursday 6 May, 2.30-5pm and 5.30-8pm
A group of 4 people only will participate in one of two intense session in the basic skills needed to edit digital video art – importing footage; editing visuals and sound; effects; and saving for different formats. A great crash course.
10th – 21st May, Weds-Sat 12-5pm
Over the next two weeks our workshop space transforms with all day open use of 4 video cameras, a Mac editing suite, and sound equipment. Artists can come into the space and experiment with the equipment onsite. Immerse yourself and produce some new moving image work as part of the studio.
Week 7 Thursday 13 May, 12 noon-8pm
All day open session to use one of 4 video cameras, the editing suite, and the sound equipment. Artist Pete Spence will be on hand to discuss and assist your own use of the equipment during this full day where the emphasis is on you to create.
Booking for all sessions is essential, on 07930 236383. Numbers are strictly limited so please book early. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Terms: Participants who book these free courses, but fail to attend will be charged £25 per workshop. Proof of address and photo ID will be required to take equipment off-site for filming.
