August Round Up – Theatre

Forgotten ThingsThere is certainly plenty on across the region to tempt you to the theatre, despite August traditionally being a quiet time on the stage. If you are under 26 you should definately think of making the most of the scheme being run by Arts Council England in association with Metro ‘A Night Less Ordinary‘ which offers free tickets to the under-26s at participating theatres. Not for the first time does the Culture Vulture wish they could knock a few years off!

How the Other Half Loves by Alan Ayckbourn: 4th June – 9th August
Stephen Joseph Theatre, Westborough, Scarborough

This month is your last chance to catch this classic farce at Scarborough’s Stephen Jones Theatre, a hilarious reminder to us all about just how much chaos can stem from one innocent little white lie…

Fame – The Musical: 6th – 8th August
Grand Opera House York

We admit it, our childhood was wasted with dreams of leg warmers and spontaneous singalongs atop new york taxis, so we could hardly resist including this little gem at the Grand Opera House York in the monthly round-up. We bet you’re singing in your head and jumping round the room already!!!

Face: 13 – 15th August
Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield

Adapted by Benjamin Zephaniah & Richard Conlon, Face, which is showing this month at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, is a story of what happens when the most popular guy at school has his life turned upside down when an accident leaves his face badly disfigured. We are told it is a gritty, fast-paced, funny and moving look at identity and appearances and what it is to be young.

Finally we couldn’t not mention Forgotten Things, the subject of our weekly ‘Road To Edinburgh Festival‘ blog posts from writer Emma Adams, even if isn’t strictly showing in the region!! We are also delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted for the 18th Mayer-Whitworth Award for playwriting. The winner will be announced in October and we’ll be sure tolet you know the outcome.
