West Yorkshire Archives reopens. Go visit!

Guest post by Fiona Marshall Archive Assistant at West Yorkshire Archives

From the riches of rural Harewood to the Victorian slums of urban Leeds, the story of Leeds is told through the records in the collections of West Yorkshire Archive Service and on Friday 30th November, we will be throwing open our doors to celebrate the opening of the new West Yorkshire Archive Service store and searchrooom in Morley.

After closing for two and a half months Leeds archives has finally reopened at our new site, and the open day is the perfect opportunity for regular and new researchers alike to visit, have a look around, and see what we were up to whilst we were closed!

Throughout the day we’ll be leading guided tours around our stores. Normally, only members of staff are allowed in them, so it’s a rare opportunity to have a bit of a look behind the scenes in the archives stores. Spaces for the tours are filling up fast though, so contact us if you would like to go on one of the tours.

We’ll also have an exhibition of original documents in the searchrooom. On display will be plans for Morley and Leeds Town Halls, recipe books, souvenir brochures and even our oldest document! The exhibition will hopefully give visitors an overview of some of the different types of records we hold and a taste of the rich history Leeds has to offer.

The Open Day lasts from 10:30am to 5pm so feel free to drop in. We look forward to seeing you then!
