Tripping Balls For TRIPTYCH

Guest blogger, Francesca Driver, @LeedsDegreeShow, previews the University of Leeds Fine Art Degree Show 2012

A shuttle launch, a piano, a dash of latex, a smidgen of straw, stir in some projection and finish with a sprinkling of dead fish and there you have it one perfectly formed TRIPTYCH the University of Leeds Fine Art Degree Show for 2012, featuring the work of 38 artists from three studios. The exhibition is the culmination of three years hard work, a severe lack of sleep and more than a few glasses of wine.

You may think that would result in a slap dash, last minute attempt at some art work but don’t be fooled! Sleep deprived and alcoholic dependents we may be but lazy we are not. Since September these diligent fine artists have been working their sweet behinds off to make an exciting and unique exhibition. Determined to go against the tradition of holding the show in our studios (a glorified corridor that has played host to countless degree shows) we set out on a mission to find a health and safety approved, 38 person capacity, close to the University, full working electrics, available for a month in June venue – all for free. It was no easy feat, but we bloody did it! I apologise for the profanities but it was hard work. A long search and more than a few nervous breakdowns later we found 28-30 Clarendon Road.

degree show 3A disused ex-research centre located just behind the University of Leeds main campus, from the outside it looks deceivingly like your average terraced house. However, step inside and you will quickly realise that this building is not your typical exhibition venue. Two terraced houses knocked through into one, 28-30 Clarendon Road presents a sprawling labyrinth of rooms. Spread across three floors one minute you are in a science lab, the next moment a magnolia haven of domesticity, the next a walk in freezer. These unique rooms have created the back drop for some seriously interesting work. Whether working in 2D or 3D, installation, sound or sculpture, many of the artists have been taking up residencies in the building in the weeks leading up to the opening night to create site specific work tailored to their individual spaces.

That’s enough for now, my magnolia walls are crying out for some attention so I will leave you with the details.
